The Alps Aflame - Skirmish at Sterzing.

 Let it Begin!

In recent times, Andreas Hofer had begun to coalesce locals for many regions to oust their occupying Bavarian garrisons in an attempt to free Tyrol from their yoke.

This all kicked off at three locations the first being in the town of Sterzing.

Overnight, the Tyrolians had gathered a force of around 5000 men and women and now marched on the isolated garrison at Sterzing. Some by road and others along the outskirts of the dense forestry nearby.

The hapless Bavarian garrison was taken completely by surprise and took a while to react, allowing Hofer and his rebels to close rapidly. Sterzing was occupied by a minor Bavarian force, consisting of four companies of the 4th Light infantry battalion and a single artillery piece, (around 450 men), under the command of Baron Donnersberg.

It must be said - not the most inspiring of leaders nor were troops serving under him.

Taking advantage of the Bavarian inactivity, the rebels attacked in a three prong move across the valley, merging on the outskirts of the town. Hofer meanwhile was conducting the operation and providing a well needed morale boost to his followers.

The Bavarian artillery although only a single gun caused quite a setback for those rebels marching down the open road.

Ignoring the mounting casualties and fuelled by rage, the rebels hit the Bavarian troops and stunned them, winning or drawing the the ensuing melees.

Finally the rebel tide broke the Bavarian garrison and swept through the town, mopping up stray interlopers and placing them into captivity.

Outcome.

Casualties on both sides were relatively light considering and they were;

Tyrolean - 102 killed, 665 wounded, 197 deserted of which 189 would return later under Hofer's guidance.

Bavarian - 108 killed, 235 wounded, 92 deserted - all were captured including the baron!
